When Things Fall Apart - We Are There
Last month HUD told us that since 2007 there has been a 30% increase in the number of homeless families. "The fragile economic circumstances of the relatives of struggling parents may mean that as soon as job losses begin in an economic downturn, support networks for families at risk of homelessness fall apart. Doubled-up housing situations cannot be sustained, cash is no longer available to help others with rent payments and families turn to homeless shelters as the only way of keeping a roof over their heads."
Far more than a roof over their heads, our shelter is a safe haven for those in need of a hope infusion. Our shelter is one of the last remaining support networks a homeless person has. Our shelter provides the tools to make lasting positive changes. Our shelter is proof positive that a caring community trumps a lousy economy every time. Our shelter continues to be a place where residents, staff, volunteers and donors share a sense of belonging to someplace special.
Whenever the indices of despair go up - and make no mistake they are up, 38% more families served at the shelter this year than last, 26% more children, we have always risen to the challenge. Our drivers provided 7,280 rides - up from last year. We provided over 51,000 meals - up from last year. Six fat, healthy newborn babies called our shelter home during 09-10, more will call it home this year. Volunteer hours are way up - 38% in one year!
We don't curse the darkness - we light candles. Thank you for helping us illuminate the path out of homelessness for all the people we served last year and for all the people we will help this year.

Joanne's Story
"I hate living out of plastic bags stored under our cots.
I'm a mother of 3 kids and i never thought I'd be homeless. I've always been employed and always been independent. I moved to Bucks County so that my kids could go to a better school. I went to work at St. Mary as a surgical technician. My son took ill and I had to miss work. I'm an insulin dependent diabetic and when he got sick, I got sick and missed too much work so I was let go. Two months later i lost my apartment. I stayed with family for awhile but nobody had enough room for all of us.
I'm still looking for employment, per diem, pool - anything.
My children haven't missed a day of school since I got to the shelter and their report cards were great. Thanks to the shelter, they get to go to summer camp every day. They all participate in the Saturday Morning Kids Club and are learning alot exploring the world outside of the shelter.
This is a well-run program. The staff here are extremely supportive and they make the kids feel comfortable and safe. Despite that, my 7 year old daughter was sitting on the edge of the tub after I gave her a bath crying. When I asked her what was wrong she said "I want to go home." All I could say is "Me too baby, me too." |

Sheltering Hope is more than the name of this newsletter. It is a dynamic process that involves the homeless men, women and children that we serve, the Red Cross staff and volunteers and our entire community. It reflects our ongoing commitment to and concern for the most vulnerable among us and the realization of their hopes and dreams.

We recently received a grant from St. Mary Medical Center Foundation to improve the health and nutritional status of the homeless people we serve. Our program is designed to help people learn healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
Thank you!

In-Kind Donations:
Gas Cards
Last year we provided over 6,240 free rides to people who needed to get to work, or to pick up their child from child care, or to medical appointments.
Cleaning Materials
Small kitchen trashbags, 55 gallon trash bags, paper towels, cleaning products, & rubber gloves
GIFT CARDS
Since our residents do not always have needs that fit easily into any category, gift cards are a great way to help us meet their needs. For example: a toddler with a cold who needs tylenol, a guy who needs steel toed boots to start a new job, or gifts to make a homeless child's birthday feel special.
You can drop these donations off at the shelter:
